Due to the pandemic, some of our students will be engaging in remote learning this year. On this page you will find information about what that looks like in Jeffco. The Spring of 2020 was a crisis response to children not being allowed to attend school in person. Moving forward, we have a conscious, purposeful, and effective way to engage students in remote learning if they have chosen to do so in response to the pandemic. For more information, please visit our district site.
Learning Management Systems (LMS)
What platforms does our district use for remote learning?
A Learning Management System, or LMS, is the platform that teachers use to digitally engage with their students. This year, if students chose to be remote learners in Jeffco, their teachers will either use seesaw (k-2), or google classroom (3-5), to deliver their content and interact with students.
Virtual Communication
How will students synchronously connect with their teacher?
Our teachers will engage with students synchronously via Google Meet or Zoom. Our district has secure access through both platforms. When synchronous learning is occurring, teachers will send an invite to students to sign onto their virtual communication platform and engage face to face with their teacher and/or other students. This link will be pushed through their LMS as often as needed.
Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning
How do students engage in learning throughout the day?
Throughout the school day, students will engage in both synchronous and asynchronous learning as a remote student. Students should still have a daily schedule that incorporates a 45 minute specials activity (art, music, or PE), a 30 minute lunch, and at least a 20 minute recess time. In the morning, they will check in with their teachers and classmates in a 30 minute morning meeting time. At the end of the day, they will wrap up their time with their teachers and classmates again before ending their school day. During their reading, writing, math, science, and social studies times, they will engage with the teacher in several different ways. Sometimes this will be a small group, sometimes a large group, or perhaps one on one. Students may be given projects to work on asynchronously and report back to their teacher, or turn in their work via their LMS and receive teacher feedback along the way. Students engaging in remote learning will have a school day like most kids, but will be engaging from home. This may look a bit different, however, expectations to learn and grow and engage in meaningful, academic content remain the same.
Schedule Your Day
One of the reasons the school day is so successful is because of the systems and structures we have in place for students. When kids engage in online learning at home, it may be difficult to structure the day. One of the most helpful tools for students to use to engage in learning is a schedule that will help them structure their day. Here is a sample schedule from a first grade virtual classroom. Posting the schedule in your home where the learning occurs daily, will help students stay focused.
Bitmoji Classroom
Some teachers are embedding google slides into their LMS with their Bitmoji classroom. This is a fun and engaging way to feel like students are in the classroom with their teachers. Links on the virtual smart board will be live with activities daily.
